Upper West Region

The Upper West Region is Ghana's northwestern frontier, bordering Burkina Faso and Côte d'Ivoire. Established in 1983, this landlocked region covers 18,476 square kilometers with Wa as its capital city. The region experiences a savanna climate with distinct wet and dry seasons, supporting agriculture as the primary economic activity. Major crops include millet, sorghum, yams, and groundnuts, while livestock farming thrives in the northern districts. The Black Volta River forms the region's western boundary, providing water resources and fishing opportunities. Mining activities, particularly gold extraction, contribute significantly to the local economy. The region comprises eleven districts and is home to diverse ethnic groups including the Dagaaba, Wala, and Sissala peoples. Educational infrastructure has improved dramatically with the University for Development Studies campus in Wa enhancing higher education access. Upper West Region showcases rich cultural diversity through its predominant ethnic groups - the Dagaaba, Wala, Sissala, and Lobi peoples. Traditional festivals like the Kobine Festival celebrate harvest seasons with colorful displays of local customs, drumming, and dancing. The region's music features distinctive xylophone performances and praise singing that accompanies community gatherings. Islamic influence is strong, particularly in Wa, where beautiful mosques blend with traditional architectural styles.
