Understanding Sunrise & Sunset Times

Sunrise and sunset times vary based on your geographic location, the time of year, and local atmospheric conditions. Our calculator provides accurate sun data for cities worldwide, helping you plan outdoor activities, photography sessions, and travel itineraries.

What We Calculate

  • Sunrise Time: When the upper edge of the sun appears above the horizon
  • Sunset Time: When the upper edge of the sun disappears below the horizon
  • Golden Hour: The hour after sunrise and before sunset when light is soft and warm - perfect for photography
  • Blue Hour: The period before sunrise and after sunset when the sun is below the horizon but daylight is still visible
  • Civil Twilight: When the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon - sufficient light for most outdoor activities
  • Nautical Twilight: When the sun is 12 degrees below the horizon - the horizon is still visible at sea
  • Day Length: Total hours of daylight from sunrise to sunset

Why Sunrise Times Change

The Earth's tilted axis and elliptical orbit around the sun cause sunrise and sunset times to change throughout the year. During summer, days are longer with earlier sunrises and later sunsets. In winter, the opposite occurs. The effect is more pronounced at higher latitudes, with extreme cases like midnight sun and polar night near the poles.
